چکیده

Introduction The brainstem represents a small but vital part of the brain. It is a railway station of dominant cerebral pathways; it integrates structures controlling consciousness, respiration, cardiovascular and visceral functions and it is necessary for survival. Even small lesions in this area could be lifethreatening. Thus, it is highly desirable to have ability to image brainstem at high resolution. Due to small brainstem size, high structural complexity and deep subcortical location, standard MRI at 1.5 Tesla provide only coarse resolution of brainstem anatomy. The goal of this study was to evaluate potential of the high field MRI (8 Tesla) of brainstem in normal subjects.

Functional subdivision of the human periaqueductal grey in respiratory control using 7 tesla fMRI

The periaqueductal grey (PAG) is a nucleus within the midbrain, and evidence from animal models has identified its role in many homeostatic systems including respiration. Animal models have also demonstrated a columnar structure that subdivides the PAG into four columns on each side, and these subdivisions have different functions with regard to respiration. In this study we used ultra-high fie...

Multi-modal ultra-high resolution structural 7-Tesla MRI data repository

Structural brain data is key for the understanding of brain function and networks, i.e., connectomics. Here we present data sets available from the 'atlasing of the basal ganglia (ATAG)' project, which provides ultra-high resolution 7 Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from young, middle-aged, and elderly participants. The ATAG data set includes whole-brain and reduced field-of-vi...

Imaging gray matter in human brainstem in vivo by high spatial resolution Diffusion Tensor Imaging at 7 Tesla

Target Audience: Researchers interested in in-vivo structural segmentation of brainstem gray matter. Introduction: The human brainstem plays an important role in the regulation of cardiac and respiratory functions, sleep, consciousness, pain control, as well as in the transfer of sensory-motor information between the spinal cord and the brain. In the brainstem, gray matter (GM) is organized in ...

High-Resolution MR Imaging of the Human Brainstem In vivo at 7 Tesla

The human brainstem, which comprises a multitude of axonal nerve fibers and nuclei, plays an important functional role in the human brain. Depicting its anatomy non-invasively with high spatial resolution may thus in turn help to better relate normal and pathological anatomical variations to medical conditions as well as neurological and peripheral functions. We explored the potential of high-r...

Noninvasive Stem Cell Labeling Using USPIO Technique and their Detection with MRI

Background: To date, several imaging techniques to track stem cells are used such as positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), Bioluminescence imaging (BLI), fluorescence imaging, CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although, overall sensitivity of MRI compared to SPECT and Bioluminescence techniques are lower, but due to high spatial reso...
